Solicitations: DC, July
Apr 17So the DC Comics solicitations for comics shipping in July are out, and I must confess, I have become sadly obsessed with these monthly disclosures of minor tidbits of trivia, which I then gnaw upon in my brain until they grow into disfigured ideas of what could happen in future comic books.
That’s right. I regularly contemplate not the future of my life, or my career, or my unborn child. I think of the future of Batman, and Wonder Woman, and the rest.
So what does the future hold? Anything interesting? Let’s see…
SPOILERS AFTER THE JUMPITY JUMP.
Wonder Woman is “all-new.” Not the title, not the person. The person who is Wonder Woman is described as “all-new.” Wither Diana? Wonder Girl (the Cassie version) has already popped up in Teen Titans One Year Later, so it’s probably not her who’s filling Wondy’s ample bustier. Donna Troy? Maybe, but we’ve seen her in the sample pages from the 52 backup series on the history of the DC universe decked out in her spangly star costume where it looks like she’s wearing the galaxy. Anyway. Intriguing indeed.
Batman’s gonna KICK YOUR ASS. Morrison and Kubert on Batman, Dini and Williams on Detective. Morrison’s allegedly bringing back the “hairy-chested love god” Batman of the seventies, and Dini is supposedly focusing (at least at first) on done-in-one detective tales. Sounds fucking tasty to me.
Nightwing has boobs. No shit. Look for yourself.
Kurt Busiek talked me into more Action Comics and Superman. I was contemplating dropping these two titles at the end of their initial OYL storyline; the hype and mystery of OYL hooked me into picking them up to see why Supes was missing, what the post-IC DC universe was like, etc. But then I started reading All-Star Superman, and I realized I probably only need one dose of Supes per month, and that I could free up some space for other titles. Then I read this interview by Busiek on his next Action Comics arc, where he’ll basically be riffing for three issues on some interstellar crazy threat while the much-speculated-about “next creative team” gets ready, or whatever. I could practically hear the excitement in his voice as he raved about his ideas, and it seduced me into sticking around for both, at least through the summer. If anyone can do the kind of fun, clever, widescreen superhero comics that make for PERFECT summer reading, it’s him. Damn you Busiek! Damn you to hell.
I heart Gail Simone. Not many clues from whence she came, as she came up through the writerly ranks during my last exile from monthly buying. But she is great with the awesomeness, with good one-liners and fun spandexy action. This means I’m thinking about the new Atom title, even if it just smells like the kind of thing that will be cancelled in 18 months.
Brad Meltzer’s JLoA run starts in July with a 0 issue. I’m excited. Many people bitch about Identity Crisis and how it brought all this unwanted darkness into the DCU because Dr. Light raped Sue Dinby and Jean Loring killed people. I thought it was still a great story, even if I didn’t see the point of the extreme violence and sexual content. So I’m psyched for Meltzer to dig once again into DC’s foremost superhero team.
Now I return to gnawing.

I LOVE Gail Simone. I started digging her thanks to her hilarious CBR column, You’ll All Be Sorry, which you should totally read if you didn’t the first time around. It’s archived here. Then I continued digging her through Killer Princesses, Birds of Prey, and so on. She’s awesome. More on her at Wiki.
