Portrait of a Prick

Portrait of a Prick

May 31

For starters, the guy’s choosen nickname means, to paraphrase the Urban Dictionary, a socially unskilled, heavy-handed, self-important prick.

His involvement with WoW suggests that it is his entire life, as evidenced by his character and that he sells items on eBay. Everything about his account suggests that he does not play the game for any sense of wonder, or thrill of the gameplay. Everything points to a drive for in-game status.

And a guy like that will always hate someone else having something he can’t and a guy like that will always beak off when a normal human would know to keep their mouth shut, assuming they actually felt it important to have an opinion on the wishes of a dying kid in the first place.

I’m with Matt – see you in hell, you malignant knob.

[UPDATE] Blizzard just deleted his posts. Five bucks says he’ll beak off over that now.

What is it about that damned game that makes people assholes?

I played for about six months, mostly with friends. A couple times, I ran into strangers in-game and quested pretty well. Once, I ran into a true asshole while questing.

But those boards are packed to the rafters with self-obsessed, humorless pricks.

Best MMORPG asshole story evar happened to a friend of mine. We were playing EQ way back when, and she could teleport between zones, which essentially turned her into a taxi, with people asking her for rides all the time.

She grouped with this one kid, figuring to make some quick gold, and poink – off they went to, wherever it was he wanted to go. Then he runs off.

She’s like, “You got that money we agreed on?”

His reply amounted to, “Ha ha, screw you!” I guess he figured since she couldn’t just take it from him, he was laughing. But he didn’t leave the group (because taunting her in group chat about how smart he was for ripping her off was a must for him, like most of these broken little pricks)

Poink – she teleports the group to one of the mean planes, breaks group, and leaves.

Warms my heart every time I think of it.

That same friend has been chatting about this guy with the kids on our company boards. She called the WoW guy a monster, and one guy pipes up that just because someone doesn’t respect someone else’s idea of what’s pointless and what’s not, doesn’t make them a monster.

    And she summed up the issue nicely;

“No. But calling a dying child a “douchebag” or a “loser” does.”

I had a meeting once, and one of the guys we met with was a producer, and he actually proclaimed that what he loved about CounterStrike was being able to run around shooting teammates.

So, I don’t have a clue what it is about games and assholes. But there are a lot of them.
