Los Angeles, They're Yours

Los Angeles, They're Yours

Interesting article by one Mr. Mark Millar on the impending demise of the comics industry.

As we know it. The latest demise. In a series of many.

Basically, his thesis seems to be that Hollywood will poach the best guys. Not so much, though, about comics inviting Hollywood guys to play and basically write their own rules on how and when material is released, creating a permissive artistic climate in the extreme, and ultimately the world we live in now, where if Kevin Smith wants to take a couple years off between issues of a limited series, well, that’s just fine.

  1. Two thoughts;

    1) While I have no doubt it’s very popular, I agree with you Matt – you may be out of the loop for 18 months writing for one single film, but if you don’t get bored and start writing something on the side, mid-film, a couple of times around the Hollywood system (where they hire you for your unique vision, then get you to change it, so it’ll sell to middle-America), they start making return visits. JMS(trazynski) has done very well for himself by writing in the open environment of comics, and using it as a support system for holding his ground in Film and TV.

    2) Is it just me, but is there a touch of “Hollywood. Land. Here.” in that post?

    The bit on 2000AD was telling – Mark, you’re right. American comics snapped you up before the baking was done.

    Man, that’d be a great Comic Con t-shirt – “Millar, I only read your comics for the pictures.”
