Stuff We Like This Week: October 16 Edition
Oct 16
In an effort to combat our occasional…okay, okay, near-constant negativity, we give you a regular feature full of nothing but love — Stuff We Like This Week. Appearing every Friday, SWLTW will recap the things that have set our little nerdly hearts aflame within the past seven days.
Sarah: I always feel like college, for whatever reason, is a tougher experience to capture in fiction than high school. Maybe it’s because your archetypal high school teens are always FEELING ALL OF THEIR FEELINGS and those of us who imagine ourselves as sensitive writerly adults can tap into that in a pretty direct sort of way. But I’m always looking for stories that get The College Thing just right, because I still felt ALL OF MY FEELINGS in college…but then there’s that added giddiness over reinventing and discovering your true self (whatever you imagine that to be). ANYWAY. All of this is to say that I think Sigrid Ellis’ and Sean Lynch‘s lovely black and white mini-comic, Cool Kids, gets the college experience exactly right and tells these perfect little stories in the space of a few pages. The dialogue is spare, the interplay between the four friends is fun and authentic, and issue #3 has a fantastic sequence revolving around a Louise Brooksian bob. You can now buy all four issues of “Cool Kids” at Slightly Obsessed Studios’ website. And you totally should. If you want to FEEL ALL YOUR FEELINGS, that is.
Matt: Comics, just comics, piles and piles of them. Went through old comics at my parents’ house last weekend, smuggled some home on the plane, sick for two days straight, and when not sleeping, reading comics. Old Quasars, JLI, random Batman prestige format one-shots. Just a shitload of comics. And I know I’m beating a dead horse at this point, but DAMN, those JLI comics are so good. As you get into the middle of the JLA run proper, you’ve got Adam Hughes replacing Kevin Maguire, with Mike McKone on fill-ins. How is this not collected again?!?!
