52 Or Shatner: Week 6
52 Or Shatner: Week 6
Jun 16Wherein you get either some babbling about DC’s series 52, or a picture of Shatner.
But not both! No, not anymore! For we must learn the value of being denied that which we want so badly!
Which is it this week? Click on and find out, yo.
I just want to sing the praises of one specific thing in this week’s 52: The chalkboard.
If you haven’t read it, or never will, Booster Gold has made his way to the labs of Rip Hunter, Time Master, because Booster thinks there’s something wonky with the timestream and wants answers.
Rip isn’t around, but what Booster finds is a wacky science lab in chaos, the centerpiece of which is a chalkboard covered in random blurbs and clues toward…something.
There’s also a globe, with a couple big X marks and the words, “World War III?” written on it. Books on the floor bear titles of old obscure DC series and miniseries. All the clocks are stopped at 11:52.
THIS is the kind of funky, strange, trippy stuff that I had prayed we’d get in 52. The meeting of the minds of Geoff Johns, Greg Rucka, Mark Waid and the wild Grant Morrison has FINALLY paid off.
What does it all mean? Will it all somehow tie together? Who or what are the 52, anyway?
It seems far too much to hope that every little tidbit in this two-page spread will get a payoff, but MAN. I admire the attempt, the ambition of it. THIS is the kind of storytelling I want in my comics–reaching over my head to deliver trippy and strange superhero sci-fi action.
Over at his Absorbascon, Scipio has a neat write-up of many of the clues and what they could mean. Fine work.
No Shatner for you!

It was like the comic equivalent of the blacklight blast door on Lost. It gave just enough answers to make you hunger for more.
exactly. these are the geek equivalents of really hot men/women who flirt up a storm but never put out. unless these DO put out and pay off on the promise within, which will shock me.
