52 Or Shatner: Week 5
52 Or Shatner: Week 5
Jun 09A simple concept, really: Each week, Alert Nerds get either a review/commentary on the latest in 52, DC’s weekly comics series, or a random picture of William Shatner.
Which will it be this week? You must CLICK to find out! CLICK, DAMN YOU!
I’m gonna talk a bit about…shark-jumping.
52 hasn’t jumped any sharks yet. It would be silly to suggest that it has. We’re six issues into a 52-issue limited series, essentially. Sure, sometimes you can tell a movie will suck five minutes into it. Mostly, you can’t.
What worries me right now about 52 is that this series could easily be biting off more than it can chew. Is it possible that all these divergent and relatively interesting storylines can come together somehow, and still pay off? Are they not running on separate rails but on the same road toward the same conclusion? Or will the series ultimately leave behind the scattered wreckage of storylines dropped and forgotten, because of time or creative wandering, so that we’ll be doomed to an endless parade of miniseries to fill in the gaps within 52, let alone the gaps within the one-year gap BEFORE 52 even started?
Cause for five issues, I was rollicking along, and then…the heroes came back from space. A fascinating wrench tossed into the works. But there are already so many wrenches, and others to come–a new Justice League, those Chinese superheroes called The Great Ten, and a damned lesbian Batwoman.
I admire the ambition. I fear for the execution. The art this issue was as ho-hum as we’ve seen in the title. The History of the DCU backup treads water. The possibility of this mystery of “the 52” is quite intriguing, but then, so is the mystery of Booster Gold’s twisted history, and of the Question and Renee Montoya’s investigation into who knows what, and the mystery of Ralph Dibny and Sue Dibny and resurrection or some such.
I’m on this ride, and I’m having fun. I just hope we don’t crash into a mountain. That would surely suck.
Oh, FINE. Here’s some Shatner too. But I will not be quite so merciful in the future!
