Mighty Jean Leads to Toy Brainwashing

Mighty Jean Leads to Toy Brainwashing

Jan 15

Previously, I documented my probably-futile attempts to squelch a potentially dangerous Mighty Muggs obsession. Since then, I’ve given in a tiny bit. I bought the wee Skrull. Someone gave me Pissed-Off-Yet-Still-Cute Princess Leia to go with Chewie. I’m trying to be selective, but I won’t lie — I get a tiny thrill when I can somehow justify purchasing yet another piece of adorably-molded plastic.

Thus my heart skipped a beat — several! — when I saw the magic words “Wave 6: Cyclops and Jean Grey.” I can absolutely justify that purchase. I can justify it several ways, with charts and graphs and excruciatingly detailed essays, and then I can pose them holding hands (well, sort of, all the Mighty Muggs have their digits frozen in a closed-off, claw-like position) and beating up the cute Skrull.

Then I clicked over and saw the picture and the Jean Grey is sort of…weird-looking.

Like, I don’t know, they can’t get the hair right in this form? Or the shiny smile is perhaps a little manic-looking?

I paused. I thought. Maybe I shouldn’t buy this? Maybe being selective means only purchasing character representations you find absolutely perfect, even if it’s one of your FAVORITE CHARACTERS OF ALL TIME and you want to own ALL REPRESENTATIONS, even the not-perfect ones?!

But, then…okay. I went looking for this image to include with my post and when I looked at it this time, I thought it was kind of cute. Have I been somehow toy brainwashed? Am I trying way too hard to convince myself? Was I just plain wrong in my initial impression? And the lopsided-grin Cyclops is pretty cute regardless, right?

  1. Oh, dear. That Jean is TERRIFYING and about to eat my soul. The Scott is adorable, but, wow, they definitely could have made Jean less insane-looking. It might make sense if it was Dark Phoenix, but her costume is green! Why does she have crazy eyes and a manic smile?

You’re making me want to look up the mini-mates figures where Emma looks like a drag queen. Anyway, yeah. . .I love the Cyke and the white-T-shirt Wolvie in this set. Not so much the Jean. Too bad!

  3. Jennifer: Yes, that’s it! She looks all soul-eater-y. Maybe that’s why I’m starting to find her cute: she has possessed me!

Caroline: I also love the t-shirt Wolvie. The drooling Sabretooth kinda freaks me out for some reason.

I might have to buy this just because it’s so weird. Maybe I’ll also buy DragEmma and they can hang out.

  4. My first impression of Mighty Muggs Jean is that she’s a repurposed figure from some never produced Gorgeous Ladies of Wrestling (G.L.O.W.) toy line that never got produced in the 80’s. The smirk, the determined eyes, the stance. She kinda scares me.
