Sky Rockets in Flight! Afternoon, er, Twilight!

Sky Rockets in Flight! Afternoon, er, Twilight!

Oct 08

Let’s all talk about the new Twilight poster. Or I’ll talk about it and you guys can chime in if you want. No pressure.

From Stephenie Meyer’s website.

Now I am of the opinion that Edward is kind of creepy (rather than SO ROMANTIC), but aren’t they supposed to make him look, well…dreamy? He mostly just appears way too eager to take a big, fat chomp out of his flowing tressed hors d’oeuvre. Bella, meanwhile, could not look more disinterested. “Whatever,” she seems to be saying. “I need to go deep condition my hair six more times and buy some denim and flannel, because that is WHAT PEOPLE WEAR in the Pacific Northwest.”

It’s not that hard to make a vampire look all broody and sexy. Right, Angel?

I think the books sound crappy, and the movie looks worse.

    Oh, I WENT THERE.

  2. I’ve had a lot of long, winding discussions with folks about how the books are Not Good (we all seem to concur on this point), yet strangely addictive. And just downright bizarre in certain places. But I think the real issue here is…why is this poster so weird?! It should be fairly easy to make an effective Mysterious Vampire-type poster, right?

I was told Twilight had lesbians. When I found out this was not true I lost all interest.

  4. The books ARE crappy, but sometimes you just need a good wallow. Like the Sookie Stackhouse books. I ready every single one because I love the character of Sookie.
As for the film, I think they have made major casting blunders here.

  5. Yes, the books are pretty awful. I read each one in a day though. I couldn’t help myself. It seems like they could have done a much better job on those posters though and on casting and the trailers (I’m branching out here). All the vampires are supposed to be super hot to the point of being mesmerizing–you know “dazzling.” The trailer and the posters don’t seem to have any of that. And Bella? Goodness, I know she’s supposed to be all super-shield-interiority-adjusting-to-the-crazy-rainy-world-of-the-PNW girl, but she just seems to flat line so far. “I’m only afraid of losing you.” She could be ordering a potato at Wendy’s. Where’s the mystery and love? Of course, I’ll still drag Steve to it in November with the promise of lots and lots of popcorn. I can’t wait to see what happens in the second movie when the werewolves and their creepy child-love show up!

Anything this popular always has backlash from people who, though they enjoy the books, have to let everyone know how BAD they are. I’m ready to start the backlash against the backlash now.

Is a book “bad” if it’s totally readable and fun? Just because a hamburger isn’t health food doesn’t stop it from being described as good.

Anyway.. the real topic is the poster. I’ve always thought the hardest thing for the movie to accomplish would be to capture the Cullen family the way that they’re described in the books. Frankly, I would be surprised if the director manages capture it in the movie. Even harder to capture that in a flat movie poster.

And, hey, if I lived in the PNW I would wear a lore more flannel.

  7. I would characterize the first one as fun and readable. I would characterize the last one as legitimately horrifying 😉

And I’m definitely not one to shy away from championing something popular if I actually think it’s good, but I have a weird relationship with Twilight — it’s unlike my relationships with most pop culture product — and it seems like a lot of other people do, too.

As far as the casting goes, I think Nikki Reed looks pretty good as Alice (one character I genuinely like throughout all four books), but I always pictured Azura Skye. I’ll have to adjust. Also, I think Robert Pattinson is quite handsome, but here he just looks creepy. They don’t look like they even like each other!

Haha, Marjie, “ordering a potato” is exactly what Bella sounds like in the preview. “And some extra chili on that mofo, OK?”
