Have y’all gotten your first glimpse of Simon Pegg as Scotty?

Check out Rotten Tomatoes for a full range of Trekkian photos.

Quite a bit of buzzing/Tweeting/message boarding about Pegg being perhaps a bit more, ahem, follicularly-challenged than James Doohan. But I don’t know…something in his expression does say Scotty. Frankly, I’m more concerned about young Anton Yelchin, who, to me, has always come off kind of whiny and miscast in just about every role he lands (particularly Charlie Bartlett, which I think I would have really liked if they had gotten someone buy-able in that part). Still, I’m trying to keep an open mind…I mean, Chekov is kind of whiny.

What do y’all think? What’s most important when trying to cast an iconic role like this one? The physical? The general essence? Both? Take a break from your Friday drudgery and TELL ME.

YELCHIN!!!! How can anyone have any complaints about anyone else in the cast with that part already ruined?

  2. You know, as someone you was much more into TNG instead of TOS, I’d much rather see them do something different with the roles, rathter than have them just impersonate what has come before. The movie has to differentiate itself from the original, or it’s just not going to work.

  3. I think it’s apparent to everyone that Simon Pegg should have his right, middle finger amputated, just like James Doohan, or this movie will be irredeemable shit!

I think the Trek roles should be like Shakespeare, eventually–any actor who can capture the essence of the character deserves a shot.

Also, all female parts? Played by men in drag.

(Yes, I’m commenting from vacation. Jealous?!)

  5. Obviously, this issue is so important, you HAD to comment from vacation. Duh.

How about a modern twist: all roles played by ladies in drag. I’ll be Sulu.

  6. So how do you handle Uhura in that style? Do you go the Victor/Victoria route and have a woman playing a man playing a woman?

    I’m fascinated.

A transgender individual should suffice – no need to make this complicated.
