Hey Dan DiDio: PUT OUT THIS AWESOME TEEN TITANS SPECIAL ALREADY.

As faithful readers of Alert Nerd know, we are regarded globally as TASTEMAKERS and INFLUENTIAL VISIONARIES OF POP CULTURE AND MEDIA.

So it should not be taken lightly when we ask–nay, when we DEMAND–that a major comic book publisher heed our words and take action on a long-dormant project.

Way back in 2003, a 48-page Teen Titans “retro” special was commissioned with a script by Bob Haney, his last work before his death. Also working on the special were Jay Stephens and Mike Allred. It is, by all accounts, one hell of a trippy thing.

Unfortunately, this special has rotted in the DC vaults since 2003, and has been solicited but never released.

Tell your friends, and your enemies, and especially your hairdresser: WE WANT THIS SPECIAL.

Then Dan DiDio will do exactly as we say, and there…shall…be…peace.

If the rumors are indeed true, and Tom Cruise will cameo in J.J. Abrams’ Trek film as Christopher Pike, then this picture gets exponentially more intriguing.

Friend to Alert Nerd Steve was discussing this with me the other day–he saw the casting as a possible sign of cautious optimism. I’m enthusiastic about someone like Abrams doing a “soft reboot” of the Trek franchise, but I’m a bit more realistic. I’d like to believe that Abrams and his writers will somehow manage to make a movie that is both incredibly cool and incredibly respectful of previous Trek and its arcane “continuity,” but that seems almost too much to ask.

As I told Steve–It’s like the Rolling Stones playing in your living room. It will probably kick ass, but if you think Keith Richards isn’t going to get stoned and break a few lamps, you’re a bit daft.

Blind Genre Item!

I’ve been thinking that it would be fun to do the occasional Blind Genre Item on the site. I know Matt and Chris probably have some juicy ones, as do many of the other savvy Alert Nerds out there. I remembered this one the other day because of all the recent chatter about nerd culture becoming mainstream culture and geeks ruling Hollywood and so on and so forth, blah blah blarg.

OK, so back in 2001-ish, I wrote for a website with “Sci-Fi” right there in the title — we wore our nerdly colors on our sleeve before it was cool or “mainstream” (or whatever word we’re using today) to do so. I wanted to write a feature on a saucy young actress with a particularly juicy recurring role on a popular genre show. Some fans thought she was grating, but I — and others — found her glorious. I had interviewed other recurring and regular players on the series and figured she’d be cheered to find herself in their company. I submitted my little request to her people…and was snippily informed that this actress didn’t do interviews with “sci-fi websites” (emphasis was definitely on the “sci-fi” part, not the “website” part).

Uh huh.

Where is she now? I can’t offer up any more hints, as the ones I’ve given you are fairly obvious. But I will say that these days, I don’t think she’d be so quick to nix the request.

Wait, wait, wait…

This debuted at Comic Con and nobody mentioned it? Booo! Shame on your nerds! This is going to be the best thing to happen all year! Whatever year that happens to be (I think it’s this fall… so… this year.)

Go watch the trailer now, then come back and we’ll discuss.
