My comic shop can beat up your comic shop

My comic shop can beat up your comic shop

May 27

I have a short, but slowly growing list of comic shops that I consider world class. I call the list, “Comic Ships That I Consider World Class.”
Meltdown Comics and Golden Apple Comics in LA would be good examples. I worked at another, way back when – Another Dimension Comics in Calgary, Alberta, Canada (you’ve heard of it – they had an Olympics there once.)

In Vancouver, I count two (with two near misses that I won’t name drop today) – Imperial Hobbies in Richmond, and my home base (home is where your account box resides), Elfsar comics.

In the four years they’ve been operating, they’ve been big advocates of Wizkids Clix games, hosting a couple of gaming nights a week. One of thier regulars went to LA a few months back and won the Hero Clix tournament – Ethan, Elfsar head honcho, took it upon himself, as a way to celebrate the victory, to build this awesome championship belt. In the middle are an excellent selection of hero clix figures, collaged together, and spraypainted gold.

Sweeeeeeet.

I’ve been pretty iffy on Lost this season, for the simple reason that I started to feel like the show was yanking my chain.

NOTE TO READERS: Do NOT yank my chain, people. I do not LIKE it. It is not, as the kids say, “kewl.”

But of course, being an obsessive nerd who loves TV, I haven’t had the cajones yet to stop actually WATCHING the show, so we did catch the Lost finale. And I must admit, I think they finally yanked my chain in an attractive-enough way to bring me back in the fold…at least, a little bit.

52 Or Shatner: Week 3

52 Or Shatner: Week 3

It seems every other blogger in the comics blogosphereoverse dimension has taken up the charge to create a weekly review of DC’s new series 52, which will run one issue every Wednesday for the next year.

Which made me wonder: Should I, a modest blogger of little regard, attempt this massive feat? Would I get bored by week 12 and just let the concept fade away? Would I even be able to create anything interesting or worth reading out of the concept?

Then it hit me: I need an out. Now I have one.

Each week, I will provide either a review of the latest issue of 52, or a random photo of William Shatner. If I’m in the mood or have some thoughts to offer, I’ll type my ass off. If not, I’ll just give you the gift that keeps on giving–SHAT.

52 review, or random Shatner–which will it be this week?! Click on to find out!

Every once in a while, there’s something I read on teh intarwheb that just plants itself in my brain and won’t leave. I think of it every couple hours, and just chuckle to myself. Thankfully, I don’t chuckle to my wife, my cow-orkers, or strangers on the street–they would think I was a weirdo.

Courtesy of the very great Mike Sterling’s Progressive Ruin (I’ve got it bookmarked–why don’t you?!?!), this gem from the DC Comics message boards:

“Bill Clinton, Lex Luthor, and Adolph Hitler”

Which do you think was a better leader?

I think Lex would be the best, followed by Hitler, and then Clinton taking up the rear.

It’s just one of those sublime things–a handful of words so elegantly designed to be stupid, divisive, insulting, satiric, brilliant, and hilarious, all at the EXACT SAME TIME.

Have I got an image processing application for you. AutoStitch was made by a couple of UBC academics and it’ll take any selection of photos you give it (of a scene) and stitch them together for you. If you’ve ever tried to do it manually, you’ll know how tough it is.

Go here for the utility. And if you’d like, go here to check out my first experiment.
