Buffy Season 8 (In Comics)

Buffy Season 8 (In Comics)

Jul 06

A few bits of new news have trickled out regarding Buffy’s next “season,” which will appear exclusively in comics form:

Speaking of Joss Whedon related concepts; I’ve heard a few things about the forthcoming Buffy season eight comics. As Whedon himself noted a few weeks ago, the first mini is going to be four issues and he is also laying out the story for the rest of the season. I’ve been told that the storyline is roughly 20 issues, spread across multiple miniseries and that Whedon will be recruiting some of his former Buffy writers to handle the bulk of the writing chores, though Whedon may return to write the “season finale” himself.

I’m also told that the first issue starts with Buffy and some of the other Slayers on a covert ops mission…

So far, sounds damned exceptional. And it begs a MAJOR question: Why isn’t this kind of thing done ALL THE TIME? I realize licensed comics are a mixed bag at best, and that readers know that to an extent. But this is a step above–the original auteur of a cult series returning to imagine the continuation of the story and recruiting former series writers to bring the whole shebang to life.

Alias seems a prime candidate for this. Also, for some reason, Twin Peaks.

The Serenity prequel book was essentially a series wrap-up that worked well.

My local shoppe owner recommended the Angel Old Friends series, as it followed in the wake of the show (while not actually going into much detail about how everyone made out after The Big Fight.)

In truth, I didn’t enjoy it that much.

Though it should be said that IDW seems to be doing a lot of TV show continuations – 24, CSI, Angel… um… CSI.

Mind you, they’re not handled by the creator or the core writers from the original series, which I think is pretty key. I’m excited too – if this goes over well, it could open up a lot more of this TV-not-on-TV type stuff.

Unlimited effects budget and no need to pay actors! Perfect!

yeah, the whedon involvement is key. that’s where I’d be aiming my money right now–chris carter and The X-Files is not the best example, cause he’s suing fox, and I think they still wanna do a new movie. but what if he were up for a miniseries that followed mulder & scully out of that hotel at the end of the tv series? anyway.

I like it! I’m trying to think of other shows I would continue. Probably not Alias, cause Jack is dead and I like where they left Syd (finally happy). Actually, the stuff I’m thinking of is probably stuff that isn’t exactly comic book friendly. NewsRadio comics!!!

OOoh. I’d love to see comdedy writers do a good comic. The only trouble is that most comedy comes from the read, not the line. And you’d needs a really, really good comic artist that understands comic strip comedy conventions more than a straight up comic artist. Like a Frank Cho or Sergio Aragones.
