Battle Angel River
Mar 18Something occurred to me after seeing Summer Glau splashed all over umpteen katrillion billboards in honor of last weekend’s Wizard World LA: she should totally play Battle Angel Alita. Yes, this is pretty much another iteration of her River/Cameron/CrazyTess on 4400 character, but I am OK with that. She does that powerful young gal thing well and this could be the part where mainstream-type people actually start noticing. Plus, she kind of naturally has that adorably constant lip-pursey thing that is one of Alita/Gally’s facial trademarks.
I’m not sure where, exactly, Cameron’s adaptation is at this point, except I’m guessing it’s back-burnered ’til Avatar comes out. I do know that he apparently wants to make Alita/Gally CG, but it sounds like they’d still need a “real” actress in the role (also, I’d like to momentarily argue against making her all CG, because CG people still look fucking creepy). Cameron must have already witnessed a bit of what Summer can do since she plays a character named after him on the Terminator show…perhaps he will see the obvious potential!
Of course, this is probably a bit like campaigning for Morena Baccarin to play Wonder Woman. Sigh.

Mar 17I keep meaning to dig through all my back issues one of these days to compile a stack of all the random nineties issues where I had letters printed, and then to scan those letters in and post them, in order to mock my own pathetic teenage nerdity–not that it was pathetic for me to be a nerd as a teen; rather that I did a pathetic job of writing what I thought to be especially erudite and clever letters.
Anyway, here’s a great story of one hopeful seven-year-old’s dreams dashed to pieces at the feet of Mattel corporate policy.

Blind Genre Item: Helicarrier or Cloudbase?
Mar 11Here’s a thought (not a useful one, but I find sitting in front of a computer with access to Wiki tends to cater to my wandering mind);
Which came first – the S.H.I.E.L.D Helicarrier in Marvel Comics or Spectrum’s Cloudbase in Captain Scarlet?
This came to mind as part of a giant office discussion on patterns in fiction, which itself grew out of a large debate about patterns that transcend simple lifting, borrowing, or homage (like the outcast boy wizard in British fiction or magical armor as found in Torchwood and the Jack Staff comic, concurrently.) After watching a clip from the last season of Doctor Who, wherein the Master had his flying base I got to pondering flying bases in general, hence today’s blind item.
