Con Memories: I AM the Asshole Here.
Jul 26I encourage everyone with fingers to visit Sarah’s Con Memories post and type out their most embarassing, exciting, and just plain WEIRD con experiences.
However, there is a tale I must share alone, a story that has long been fabled in Alert Nerd lore. I’ve decided it’s time to reveal…the time when Jonathan Frakes called me an asshole. And I probably deserved it.

Con Memories
Jul 25In honor of Comic-Con, let’s all share some of our favorite con memories! I know you’ve got ’em!
Here’s one I was thinking about just the other day. It kind of encapsulates the heady, drunken nature of cons and the way in which the line between celebrities of all grades and regular fan-folk tends to get blurred.
A couple years ago, my pal Pelgar and I worked for the licensed website of a certain big-ass genre property. Through our jobs, we met some of the folks who worked on said property, including “Banana,” a trusty behind-the-scenes sort who was also a major fan favorite on the convention circuit. At one particularly gigantic con, we spotted Banana, drink in hand, chilling outside of the VIP party. “Well, hello there, Banana!” we said jovially. Banana gazed upon us with bleary, quizzical eyes. She obviously did not recognize us. She could probably only see a pair of vaguely fankid-shaped blobs. She finally muttered/slurred a half “hello,” then tottered swiftly back into the VIP area. As she skittered away, we imagined a little thought balloon above her head: “Oh, no…I must get away from THE FANS!!!”
Pelgar and I have since repeated and exaggerated and built upon that anecdote many, many times. He still makes me laugh by going, “Who am I?!” and swaying around drunkenly. So actually, I guess this is more of an example of how cons bond people in an inexplicable — yet very lasting — way.
Sylar = Spock
Jul 24I’m still kind of opposed to non-Shatners and non-Nimoys playing Kirk and Spock, but this is not a bad choice.

That creaking sound you hear is my fangirl mind opening up just a tad.
Geek Friday
Jul 24All right, so I am not going to Comic-Con. I know all of you who listened to our podcast (Matt’s mom, my husband, etc.) were anxiously awaiting the outcome of that little debate. I am totally OK with it, though, and plan to refresh The Beat hourly for updates. I am especially OK with it because Saturday sold out already and the prospect of entering that hot ‘n’ sweaty fray is not a pleasant one.
I am, however, making my Friday as nerdy as possible to compensate. First up is a showing of The Simpsons Movie at the Arclight with a big gang of people. My friend Jenelle, who is the most passionate Simps fan I know, is leading the charge. Incidentally, Jenelle and I are both Oregonians and we are pissed that the Oregon Springfield was not named as the “official” Springfield. Matt Groening was born in Oregon. There should be no question!
After that, some of us are heading to a midnight screening of Wet Hot American Summer. David Wain and assorted cast members are supposed to be in attendance. That movie made me a Paul Rudd fan for life. It’s also the reason that I respond to stuff I don’t like with a hearty “BOOOOOOOOOO!!!” Should I go in costume? I could totally pull off Janeane Garofalo’s awkward camp counselor thing.
Burn Down The Mission
Jul 24Superstar retailer (and ringleader of the magnificent new incarnation of The Savage Critics) Brian Hibbs chimes in with his on-the-ground reporting of Countdown and DC, and it ain’t pretty.
