I’ve known for awhile now that my friend Chris Woods was contacted by the production designers for Clerks 2 – they wanted to use some of his McTopia paintings as posters in the fictional Mooby’s fast-food restaurant.

One could be seen clearly in pre-release set pictures, but didn’t show up much in the final film – the other, well, it was right behind the prep counters, so it showed up all the time.

Here, see what I mean after the jump.

Today, I sweat and I pack and I type at the moment. I also wait for Sarah to arrive with my San Diego swag.

Tomorrow, I leave LA and drive three or fourish days to Longwood, FL, where me and wife and baby will soon make home.

Anything, um, nerdy I need to see between here and there?

Too hot? It’s too hot here, otherwise I’d sleep. If you’re up like I am, how about some good stuff to watch? (these also function very well as a way to avoid work, come Monday.)

First up, Mike Mignola’s Amazing Screw-on Head has been turned into an animated show on SciFi. Paul Giamatti does the voice of Screw-on Head and David Hyde Pierce is awesome as Emperor Zombie. It’s very, very funny and very, very Mignola – all at once. Zombies. And best of all, SciFi is letting you watch the pilot episode online for free.

And in the human catagory, I’d like to direct you to a couple of friends of mine, who wrote, directed, and produced this fantastic comedy short called Hooped. It’s been a best kept secret in Vancouver for a few years, but thanks to iFilm and now, even better, YouTube, the world can see it for themselves – just don’t watch it at work with the speakers on. You WILL want to listen using headphones. Language prudes need not apply either.

Hooboy.

Marvel has been publishing these great Marvel Universe codex-style books, but each one focuses on a particular decade – I picked up the 1970s issue to check it out. So much great stuff. Bios for favorites like The Punisher and Power Man, as well as bizarre rarieties, like Hellcow and Hypno-Hustler. Sooo cheesy good.

The book also takes a look at groups that existed in the 70s and covers their 70s exploits in broad terms – Power Man replaced The Thing in the Fantastic Four, so that’s covered. The exploding roster size of The Avengers was covered, for example. And The Lady Liberators were covered;

The short version can be found online, though I’d recommend the book account as it has more pictures. Here’s my super-short version. Amora the Enchantress appears as Valkyrie and convinces the women members of The Avengers to overthrow their male oppressors – they head off to where the male avengers are fighting the Masters of Evil. They stomp the Masters and then proceed to stomp the Avengers. The whole plot comes out when the Enchantress turns on the Liberators.

Once he wakes up from his thumping, Giant-man chides the women for dabbling in Women’s Lib. The Scarlett Witch retorts, “That’s what you think– male chauvinist pig! One of these days, the Liberators will stage a comeback– right, Jan?”

And they lived happily ever after, until Hank Pym beat Jan, and Wanda (the Scarlett Witch) marries a robot, has two imaginary kids, and goes insane. Sheesh. Nice try, Marvel – whatever it was you were trying. The background of the Valkyrie bears some repeating, but I’ll leave that for another day.

As Sarah pointed out earlier, the Holmes Trooper actually posted a comment to our site. Then Sarah’s post went away. Then his comment went away. Then I went away, drank heavily, returned, beat my computer with a baseball bat, and then everything was working – better yet, I found copies of everyone’s stuff in some cache files. Hooray!

The Trooper’s post is particularly notable, as you can buy Holmes Trooper schwag from Cafe Press – Heeeeee! And better yet, I’ve discovered they have MySpace pages. Fuck Tom, I want THEM on my friend list (sorry Tom.)
