Free Piece of Paper Day
May 24I keep forgetting to post about this…but NO MORE!
One of the two shops I hit on Free Comic Book Day a few weeks ago had a novel, funny, and sharp promotional gimmick from an intrepid indy creator–a Free Piece of Paper.
That’s right. Just a xeroxed sheet of paper with a funny cartoon on it. It’s a promo for In My Lifetime #1, coming out in June from Silent Devil Comics.
Just wanted to mention it because I thought it was so goddamned clever, and I wanted to promo the book a bit more, cause it looks funny. And Warren Ellis seems to like it. Which means it must be fucking GOOD.

May 23I’m posting the links here, because I think it’s one of the more pointless, yet amusing things I’ve done in ages, and it seems a shame to leave it in the 1up ghetto.
Item for the day – perspective
May 23As I’d mentioned before, When Fangirls Attack! continues to be a wealth of good reading, but it also from time to time highlights that online commentary can be a little narrow beam, if you follow my meaning.
Post Modern Barney took a stab at men who are raped in comics – or at least that was the title. It turned into a short list of male characters he could think of that had either been raped in jail, abused as a child (which is a pasty way of saying raped in childhood) and torrmented because Garth Ennis / Mark Millar think male on male rape is really, really funny. I half expected at this point that Dorian (site author) would deconstruct the list – there was certainly a lot to loook at. The use of child abuse as character definition, especially when applied retroactively to a character. Rape in prison – what’s it all mean? And why are Millar and Ennis such prats by times? To be sure, he does take a look at those topics, but not in much depth (and the Millar / Ennis bashing was sadly left to the comment discussion.
Canada's Next Top Model

In case you yanks weren’t aware, all the Idol produced shows have been parceled out to other countries – Canadian Idol was way more interesting to me, as the six degrees of serperation between the contenstants and viewers was much smaller than in the US.
Now, after the success of America’s Next Top Model, the Canadian version is about to debut – hosted by… Number Six. No shit.
I’m curious to see who will have the stronger reaction – girl powah and BSG hardcore Sarah, or reality show maven, Matt.
UPDATE: Wow, Stacey MacKenzie’s one the judges. Man say what you will about Fifth Element, but that spaceliner filled with freckled stewardesses will be with me until the day I die. Paul Venoit made an appearance at the Shopper’s Drug Mart I worked at in high school, but that’s not nearly as interesting.
UPDATE UPDATE: I’m calling bullshit on Manitoba, Saskatchewan, Quebec, and the Atlantic Provinces (not to mention the territories) not being represented. This is more like The Parts Of Canada That Have An Office For A Particular Modelling Agency’s Next Top Model.
