Civil Secret War of the Heroes

Civil Secret War of the Heroes

May 03

So – Marvel, continues to recyle old DC events, with the upcoming Civil War, in which the government moves to have super powered beings register.

I don’t think it’s a good idea and having Mark Millar at the helm seems like a recipe for doing terrible, epic, and harmful things to the Marvel universe. However, they’ve been plotting it and here it comes. It’s kind of like the Apocalypse (the biblical one, not the one Marvel did, with mutants) – if it’s going to happen any way, you might as well enjoy the show.

What I’m aghast at is the cost. 79 issues (not counting a scrapbook and Marvel Spotlight on the creative brains), at four bucks a pop (an un-godly 5.75 in Canada – that ain’t the exchange rate, if you’re wondering) is $316.

Cough it up, Fanboy.

Awesome Lea Hernandez has announced Grant NAN, which will award a year’s worth of hosting at WebComicsNation.com to a woman making webcomics. She plans on awarding three grants annually; details and submission guidelines to be announced in June. Read the full press release here. Very kickass and proactive.

I think I need to go re-read Rumble Girls and tell my “Diva says fuck you!” story over at Great Hera! I’ll just leave that nice and vague for now, because that’s how I roll.

Shameless linkage: Here’s a Daniel Clowes interview I did for Back Stage. It will interest even non-Cloweshead nerds to know that he’s currently working on a script about this. Cool, eh?

Men Are Pigs.

Men Are Pigs.

I’ve been following the recent explosion amid the comics blogosphereoverseodimension regarding the alleged sexual assault case of Taki Soma, but have hesitated writing about it, since I wasn’t sure what I could possibly add to the discussion. To me, if nothing else, the incident and subsequent commentary (especially some of the “gems” from message board posters and commenters) shakes out as just the latest example of the extreme chauvinism that still lurks at the heart of fandom, comics and otherwise. We men are truly pigs, and we unsocialized repressed nerds can be especially raw and filthy pigs.

So what made all that come together for me? Today’s Newsarama piece, which is a good read packed with links to all the relevant and important writings so far about the incident…which I read accompanied by a banner ad to the left for Victoria’s Secret Service, which has to be the most shameless T&A book on the stands right now. (Reload a few times if you don’t see it right away.)

So we’re reading about this ugly, unfortunate incident and the (alleged) shameful treatment of a woman, even as we’re glancing over to scope the bodacious tatas in the latest tit book. That’s it exactly. That’s what’s wrong.

One missing link from Newsarama: An incredible post from The Pulse by Heidi MacDonald. A must read.

Adorable Kristen Bell talks about a bunch of stuff, including the long-awaited geek flick Fanboys. (Well, long-awaited by…me. And Chris. And Matt.) Apparently, it’s an “orgy to the fans.” An orgy!

Kristen also talks about Veronica Mars and doesn’t seem too worried about the series’ future. Which is good, because I will be EXTREMELY UPSET if it does not grace The CW next season. Please, CW…none of this Pepper Dennis crap. Veronica’s your girl!
