Civil Warness and ICology

Civil Warness and ICology

Lured by the fanboy siren song of a major summer comics crossover series, I picked up Civil War #1 on Wednesday, even though I’m not buying any other current Marvel titles, and don’t really want to get involved in their universe whatsoever.

Thing is, though, the damn issue was actually quite good. Especially considering it came hot on the heels of Infinite Crisis #7, concluding DC’s biggest crossover in years. In fact, it sorta kicked Infinite Crisis’ silver aged ass.

Casting Iron Man

Found via Newsarama: Actor/director/Iron Man helmer Jon Favreau (who I have loved ever since 1) my friend Bea had a dreamy interview with him while we were both working for the college newspaper and 2) he was on a talk show and told a story about how he was going in to audition for a character oh-so-elegantly named “Fatass,” and he told the receptionist he was there to read for the part of “Mr… Fah-Toss?”) has started a MySpace page asking for fan input on the Iron Man movie. This is perfect for comic book fans who love to bitch about comic book movie casting. I hate those guys!

Veronica!

I need to talk for a second about how ass-kickingly awesome Veronica Mars is right now. Aaron Echolls? Not guilty? WOW. I think a lot of shows would have cast that character off right after season one: he’s the bad guy, he did it, ace girl detective Veronica can prove it! He’s going to jail, right? And he’ll never be heard from again, right? Well, no. Because everything in Veronica’s world is more complicated than that. And because Harry Hamlin is really, really — no freakin’ joke! — good.

I would also like to give Kristen Bell an Emmy based solely on her reaction to Wallace getting shot — that little gasp/sob thing was beautiful. And I love how Veronica instinctively shielded Gia during the chaos — maybe they’ll give her a class protector award at graduation.

I can’t wait for next week’s season finale (here already? Dang). And then the third season on The CW, because that is totally happening, right Dawn Ostroff?

Two more terrific bits of journalism and commentary on the Mid-Ohio Con scandal. I think Heidi MacDonald is doing some of the most fair, thoughtful, and balanced writing on this issue right now, something that requires its own kind of bravery when the scary world of teh intarwebs has decided they’re gonna get self-righteous about something.

Well, it’s coming. Star Wars as most of us knew it and loved it when we were still in short pants is hitting DVD.

That’s a good thing. There can be no doubt. But of course, being a card-carrying Lucas hater, I have a bad feeling about this.
