Item for the day – perspective
May 23As I’d mentioned before, When Fangirls Attack! continues to be a wealth of good reading, but it also from time to time highlights that online commentary can be a little narrow beam, if you follow my meaning.
Post Modern Barney took a stab at men who are raped in comics – or at least that was the title. It turned into a short list of male characters he could think of that had either been raped in jail, abused as a child (which is a pasty way of saying raped in childhood) and torrmented because Garth Ennis / Mark Millar think male on male rape is really, really funny. I half expected at this point that Dorian (site author) would deconstruct the list – there was certainly a lot to loook at. The use of child abuse as character definition, especially when applied retroactively to a character. Rape in prison – what’s it all mean? And why are Millar and Ennis such prats by times? To be sure, he does take a look at those topics, but not in much depth (and the Millar / Ennis bashing was sadly left to the comment discussion.
Canada's Next Top Model
May 23
In case you yanks weren’t aware, all the Idol produced shows have been parceled out to other countries – Canadian Idol was way more interesting to me, as the six degrees of serperation between the contenstants and viewers was much smaller than in the US.
Now, after the success of America’s Next Top Model, the Canadian version is about to debut – hosted by… Number Six. No shit.
I’m curious to see who will have the stronger reaction – girl powah and BSG hardcore Sarah, or reality show maven, Matt.
UPDATE: Wow, Stacey MacKenzie’s one the judges. Man say what you will about Fifth Element, but that spaceliner filled with freckled stewardesses will be with me until the day I die. Paul Venoit made an appearance at the Shopper’s Drug Mart I worked at in high school, but that’s not nearly as interesting.
UPDATE UPDATE: I’m calling bullshit on Manitoba, Saskatchewan, Quebec, and the Atlantic Provinces (not to mention the territories) not being represented. This is more like The Parts Of Canada That Have An Office For A Particular Modelling Agency’s Next Top Model.
Holy crap
May 22I have an IMDB listing! When the hell did that happen?
I guess I should make, like, a movie or something.
UPDATE – Sarah’s had the cracking idea of adding trivia. I can add up to 5 pieces of trivia (I don’t know if that’s total or in one go, but let’s assume total for now.) I’d like them to be based on fact, but as fantastic/mundane as possible. Maybe I’ll leave the fifth as a completely made up, Chuck Norris-esque fabrication.
So, suggestions (either for the completely made up one, or what my “truthful” ones should be?)
UPDATE 2: I have one.
“Chris Stewart is physically and mentally incapable of telling The Aristocrats joke.”
This is… FACT!
The internets lied to you about Ghostbusters 3
May 22I’ve been running a Ghostbusters fansite for just under 10 years. Initially Ghostbusters was just a nerdy incentive to learn HTML. Then it became a personal challenge – to keep a website running consistantly, while others would come and go. Now it’s just habit. The point is, if they were going to make a third Ghostbusters movie and you wanted to double check the information, who ya gonna call? (Sorry, I couldn’t help it.)
Well, here we are – the net is in an uproar over Ghostbusters 3. But it’s nothing more than bad journalism, amplified by lazy blog paraphrasing, and the desperate desires (both for and against a third film) of fankids.
Random stuff
May 17I think we need a name for when we do these collection of items posts. Maybe something we could slightly tweak individually. And I haven’t a clue what that something could be. I’m going to think on it.
First off, Clerks II is hitting theaters at the end of July instead of the end of August. Hooray! Apparently they’re debuting at Cannes, so rather than lose momentum, they’re going to release nearly a month early. Also, Kevin has a second Evening with Kevin Smith DVD coming out, An Evening with Kevin Smith 2: Evening Harder. HAAAAaaaaokay the funny of the title doesn’t last long. But I’m getting the DVD, because that stuff’s high-larry-us.
Secondly, Ernie Cline has a new CD out, The Geek Wants Out, which isn’t as extensive in content as his first CD, but hits all the high notes and it’s not a disc he burnt himself. I treasure my Ultraman is Airwolf CD, inkjet label and all.
Thirdly, umpteen new Hot Fuzz on-set video journals have been posted.
Fourthly, Stan Lee has a reality TV show? Why did no one tell me? You got to see the season finale to Battlestar Galactica first, what more do you want? I get it. You’re angry because we got Dr. Who first. Well, be that way.
Honestly, as kooky as the whole thing sounds (Who Wants To Be A Superhero?) I like that the competitions test the high end of human standards (courage, compassion, self-sacrifice, etc.) I’m all done watching contestants shouting at one another to lose. Ever watch Fear Factor lately? There’s a few people I’d like to punch. Well, a lot really. At least one in every show, that doesn’t know when to draw the line between strategy smack talk and just being a prick.
