Jeff and Sarah and Caroline BS About Comics "Nostalgia"
Jan 19
Alert Nerds Sarah and Jeff enjoy BS-ing about random stuff. Sometimes their friend Caroline from Fantastic Fangirls enjoys joining them for such things. Last week, a bunch of big-ass comics news came down the pike and the internet got its bitch on and the emails between this mighty trio flew fast and furious. Here’s what transpired.
Calling All Nerdblogs: What's Your True Geek Confession?
Jan 15
The Alert Nerd brain trust is pleased to announce another very special Mega-Blog Crossover Event…and YOU can be part of it.
In the grand tradition of last year’s amazing “What’s Your Scott and Jean?” Day, we present…
True Geek Confessions
The Date: February 17
The Background: Unpopular opinions: we all have them. Sometimes you stand alone in loving a super niche-y run of a popular comic book series (like Sarah and her Tefe Holland thing). Sometimes you’re the only person on the entire planet to ‘ship a certain ‘ship. Sometimes you simply Do Not Get a movie the rest of your geeky brethren is falling all over themselves about. And because a lot of fandom is about sharing loves and hates and communing with your fellow geeks, this can feel awfully lonely. But perhaps if we confess our most unpopular opinions for all the internet to see…well, we’ll feel just a little bit better.
Here’s what you do: On February 17, write up a blog post with your own True Geek Confession. Send your link to sarah AT alertnerd DOT com. We will add you to our master list blog post and you can link back to said post. It will be exciting and wonderful and will hopefully not provoke too many “die in a fire” type arguments.
Confirmed Participants: Fantastic Fangirls, Faust’s Fantastically Fantasmagoric Forum, The Book Smugglers, The Savage Critics’ Jeff Lester…maybe YOU?
The Bin – 1/15/10
Jan 15
We used to just like stuff every week. Now we throw that in a blender with links, videos, and random claptrap and we call it…THE BIN. It stinks like garbage but it doesn’t taste half bad.
Rage of the Red (Internet) Lanterns

I’ll be upfront: I’m a Blake Lively fan. I love how shrewdly she captures Serena van der Woodsen’s messy It Girl joie de vivre every week on Gossip Girl and her slumber party monologuing in The Sisterhood of the Traveling Pants never fails to make me cry like a small child who has just been denied candy.
And so, you know, I sort of braced myself when I found out she’d been cast as Carol Ferris. Because I knew the resulting internet shitstorm was probably going to be brutal and horrible and enough to make me long for the days when we geeks didn’t have 140-character tools that allow us to instantly register every tiny drop of vitriol we might be experiencing at any given moment.
It was. Of course it was.
2009: My Favorite Comics
Dec 30
A few notes before we begin: I read everything in trade these days. (Civil War broke me, you guys — broke me.) That means that I am 1) eternally behind by at least one Astounding Marvel Crossover Event 2) listing things here that are either collected editions or graphic novels. Cause that’s what I read. Initially, I was going to make everything I read this year — regardless of release date — eligible, but that proved to be too daunting a task. So the stuff on this list actually came out this year (though in one case, I believe it came out in hardcover last year and in trade this year, but I bought the trade, so that’s what counts).
So…yes. I guess this is more like My Ten Favorite Comics That Came Out in Trade Paperback Format This Year. Honestly, sometimes explaining your reading habits is just as confusing as explaining Big Two continuity.
And now, in no particular order…
