Yay, Dresden. Boo, Files.
Aug 03OK, so apparently The Dresden Files is not returning, but the actor who plays Harry (Paul Blackthorne) will appear recurringly on the new fall series Big Shots (that’s the one with Michael Vartan and Dylan McDermott, not the one with Peter Krause. I keep getting them mixed up). I tried in vain to get into the Files and never could, but I do think Blackthorne is sort of mind-meltingly hot. Not sure about the Big Shots character, though — sounds kinda oily. I like him in scruffy Harry mode. I also like pre-judging things before I see them, because it’s the geekly way.
Fanfic in my Mind
Jul 30The 4400 kind of blows this season. Thus, I spend most episodes idly wishing that Tom and Diana would totally DO IT. Yeah! Nobody cares about that blonde chick/obvious Tom love interest, 4400 producers. Or the suddenly-prominent IT guys. Or the fact that Shawn has magically transformed into a total idiot. But everyone — EVERYONE — cares about Tom and Diana DOING IT. Just trust me on this one.
Spock Also = Spock
Jul 26Now I’m excited! Sylar’s playing the young Spock, but Nimoy’s also dustin’ off the old ears for a “meaty cameo.”
Other exciting news in this article: Karen Allen is going to appear in the new Indiana Jones movie! I LOVE Marion Ravenwood. She’s the best Indy girl by a country mile.
Con Memories
Jul 25In honor of Comic-Con, let’s all share some of our favorite con memories! I know you’ve got ’em!
Here’s one I was thinking about just the other day. It kind of encapsulates the heady, drunken nature of cons and the way in which the line between celebrities of all grades and regular fan-folk tends to get blurred.
A couple years ago, my pal Pelgar and I worked for the licensed website of a certain big-ass genre property. Through our jobs, we met some of the folks who worked on said property, including “Banana,” a trusty behind-the-scenes sort who was also a major fan favorite on the convention circuit. At one particularly gigantic con, we spotted Banana, drink in hand, chilling outside of the VIP party. “Well, hello there, Banana!” we said jovially. Banana gazed upon us with bleary, quizzical eyes. She obviously did not recognize us. She could probably only see a pair of vaguely fankid-shaped blobs. She finally muttered/slurred a half “hello,” then tottered swiftly back into the VIP area. As she skittered away, we imagined a little thought balloon above her head: “Oh, no…I must get away from THE FANS!!!”
Pelgar and I have since repeated and exaggerated and built upon that anecdote many, many times. He still makes me laugh by going, “Who am I?!” and swaying around drunkenly. So actually, I guess this is more of an example of how cons bond people in an inexplicable — yet very lasting — way.
Sylar = Spock
Jul 24I’m still kind of opposed to non-Shatners and non-Nimoys playing Kirk and Spock, but this is not a bad choice.
